When I arrived at the UTSWMC rookery on this day the first thing I did is check the ibis nest. Not surprisingly, it was empty.
The young ibis has grown rapidly over the last several weeks. Lacking competition from siblings the ibis hatchling was able to monopolize its parents attentions. As a result, he was well fed and quickly outgrew his nest.
After a little looking, I found the juvenile ibis exploring the upper branches on the tree of his birth. Nearly as large as an adult now, this youngster will soon be following his parents on foraging expeditions.
In other parts of the rookery the White Ibis news was not as good. The following picture is of the nest where the incubation of eggs seemed to be running long. The nest is in shambles now. Destroyed and abandoned.
