This nest of baby cottontails was discovered just before a nasty cold front and rain storm were due to come through. A few hours later the temperatures dropped, and the downpour came. Somehow all of the baby rabbits survived the cold snap.

Unfortunately, life is full of hazards for baby cottontails. A couple of days later a neighborhood cat raided the nest. One baby was found dead, and the others were nowhere to be found.

Look carefully, and you can see an Eastern Cottontail nest in the dirt, just to the right of the tree trunk.
