This large group of Canada Geese was found congregating in the parking lot of the Cisco Systems campus in Richardson, Texas.
It is not entirely clear why the geese have chosen this spot as their gathering place. There is a sizable artificial water feature on the property and several large well manicured fields of grass. The geese in these pictures were feeding on acorns that had collected in the parking lot islands.
These birds were generally tolerant of being observed, and the pedestrians and drivers in the parking lot were courteous and considerate of the geese.

Chris, you don’t think the lawns and the acorns were enough to attract the geese? Seems to me that they would be. I see geese in similar settings over a wide geographic swath of country.
Oh, Yes, I do, David. Which is why I mentioned those things. Still, something strikes me as unusual about this situation, which is why I hedged a bit. I can’t quite put my finger on it, so maybe its nothing.
I’ve been driving by this spot for years now, and have never noticed geese there before. It’s hard to believe I missed them, but maybe I did! I’m hoping a reader will chime in and fill in some of the gaps.
The Canada Goose population is extremely high now. They are likely using habitats that they would not have just a few years ago. Also, these are resident geese, and those populations have only existed for 20 years or so, probably less in Dallas. So, they are learning new ways.
People who back up to Sheryl Park golf course see Canadian Geese on the golf course a few times every month. I counted 27 one day last week. The golfers just work around them and they do the same for the golfers.
Ok, that’s good info! This Golf course is just a short distance from the Cisco campus!
I saw one at school yesterday. I was just walking when I heard this weird honking sound. I thought it was a person then I turned around to see this huge bird RIGHT BEHIND ME.
I found him later on the roof of a building, honking audibly and hilariously.
I was kind of hoping he would stay and be friends but I can’t find him anymore. sigh.
