Common Nighthawks are usually observed at night. They can often be seen (and heard) flying above lighted parking lots.
Every once in a while you might stumble across one perched in a tree during daylight hours. That’s what happened in this case.
Notice how the bird is perched inline with the branch so to better conceal himself. Also note the large size of the nighthawk’s eyes. The large eyes no doubt help the nighthawk see in the low light conditions encountered when the bird is most active.
