I spotted this big female American Kestrel as she dove to the ground in pursuit of flying grasshopper. By the time I had approached close enough for pictures, the kestrel had secured its prey and returned to her perch on the utility line. She made short work of the grasshopper, devouring the entire insect in just a matter of minutes.

I just saw a kestrel on the ground with a sparrow in my back yard. I am 2 blocks north of the railroad yards along Vickery Blvd between Hulen & University Streets. That’s downtown Ft Worth. I was so surprised that I moved & startled it away.
That’s a good sighting, Karen. Kestrels are some of my favorite birds. Thanks for sharing!
