I spent some time hiking (read, struggling) through the bottom lands surrounding a small creek in Frisco this weekend. There are a lot of Greenbrier Vines in this part of the woods. These vine have thorns and they can create an impediment very much like a tangle of barbed wire. They make the going very difficult in places.
I was working hard trying to pick my way through the less dense parts of the underbrush when I clumsily spooked a large bird from the branches above me. The bird flew a short distance through the canopy before landing again.
There, through an array of crisscrossed branches, I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this fine Great Horned Owl.
