I have really done it this time. You might ask who’s bright idea it was to bring two energetic, playful and large puppies into our home? Well, that would be me. What in the world was I thinking?

Meet Britney and Shadow. These two Lab-mixes were found a few weeks ago abandoned in a box left beside a busy country highway. One look at their puppy-dog faces and I knew I would have to help find them a good home. Meanwhile, it appears that my face had “sucker” written all over it!

In spite of everything they have been through, these two resilient pups appear no worse for the wear. All indications suggests that these are going to be great dogs. They are happy, confident and well socialized. They are also proving to be very trainable.

So, what can the pups do now? Well, already they can sit. They can walk on a leash. They crate themselves on command, if a treat is involved. And, I think, we are getting very close on the house training (fingers crossed). They don’t asked to be let out just yet, but accidents have nearly been eliminated.

Interestingly, they haven’t quite learned their names yet. Right now, I suspect they likely believe their names are “BritneyShadowNo.” A little extra one-on-one attention will probably be required to have a breakthrough in this area.

We’ve never owned dogs before, and we were/are unsure what to expect from these two fun-loving pups. But, things have been going well so far, though the wet and cold weather has been something of a challenge to deal with. Warm and dry puppies are eminently more fun than cold and wet ones.

We fully intend to make these great dogs a permanent part of our family, but on the off chance that we are not able to give them everything they need, we may have to make other arrangements in the near future. Right now the plan is to keep them in our care for another month or two—at least until they have had their vaccinations and have been spayed, neutered, and microchipped. At that point we will take stock and decide whether keeping them with us will be in their best interest—and ours. Whatever our decision turns out to be, I will make the announcement here on the website shortly afterwards.

In the meanwhile, updates to DFW Urban Wildlife may be a bit sporadic for a time as we adjust to life with our new guests. I just wanted to let you know.
