Great-tailed Grackles are aptly named. The sound of the word “Grackle” describes these birds to a tee. It perfectly encapsulates their appearance and their behaviors. Grackles are loud and abrasive sounding birds. They congregate into large, noisy, and messy groups at sunset when it is time to roost. During the day, grackles are opportunistic, bold, and sneaky. They are obnoxious.
In spite of the bird’s general unpleasantness, there is a beauty to be found in their countenance for anyone willing to look closely enough.
