These Mourning Doves were photographed in a Carrollton subdivision. Mourning Doves are our most common dove, and there was a time when they might be the only dove you would ever see in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. But things have changed over the last 10 to 15 years. Sometime during that period both White-winged Doves and the invasive Eurasian Collared-dove moved into our area. Both are thriving here and both have growing populations! I have included pictures of these two species of dove below to help give you a better impression of their differences.

  1. I live in Garland. In 2015 I never once heard or saw a mourning dove. Only white-wings and collared doves. Mourning doves appear to have been pushed out completely. It’s a pity: their calls are nice to listen to. White-wings sound to me as if they’re saying “Sell us your soul!” and collared doves will go on with their “hoo-HOO-hoo” call for well over a dozen frenetic repetitions. All 3 species are just behaving according to their natures, but I prefer the soothing calls of the mourning doves and I miss them.
