I found this Monk Parakeet colony using information provided by one of my readers. This observant lady noticed Monk Parakeets in the trees around her office building near the intersection of Plano Road and the LBJ Freeway. A quick look at Google Maps revealed an electrical substation in the general vicinity. Given the Monk Parakeet’s proclivity for nesting on these structures it wasn’t hard to guess where I might find the birds!

I arrived just in time to see a pair of Parakeets bolt from their nest and head west down the utility right of way. Afterwards, all was quiet at the substation. It appeared to be devoid of birds. I walked around a bit taking pictures of the large communal nests the that were built on the structure. From the looks of things there were five parakeet nest at this location.

A few minutes later a group of six noisy parakeets returned to the substation. They landed on the steel girders and proceeded to make quite a ruckus, before each bird in its turn retired to the safety of their nests.
