There were a lot of Painted Buntings active in LLELA (the Lake Lewisville Environmental Learning Area) on this Saturday morning. Surprisingly, the bright colors of the male bunting become muted at a distance and these birds can be a challenge to notice unless you are actively looking. Painted Buntings are also flighty little birds and move about quickly and frequently. An attention getting flash of red—which could easily be dismissed as a cardinal—is often all that gives them a way.
