A saw this strange apparition in the middle of a field of Smartweed at Lake Ray Hubbard in Garland, Texas. The ground at this spot was inundated with about 8 inches of water at the time.

At first it was not obvious what this odd shape in the distance was, but as I drew nearer its identity was revealed. This lone sentinel was a male Mallard.

I’m not certain what he was doing or why he was alone in the middle of the field like this, but I gave him a wide berth in order not to disturb him further.
