Coyotes are some of my favorite animals. I observed this individual at John Bunker Sands while I was out photographing the Bald Eagle’s nest earlier in the spring.

He was very far away when I first noticed him. Slightly redder in coloration than your average Coyote, this guy’s auburn fur is what first attracted my attention. He was bobbing his head up and down in the tall grass trying to have a better look around. It was like someone was signaling me by waving a red flag.

As I watched, the Coyote went about his normal business. On a couple of occasions I saw him engage in some pounce-hunting behavior. I think he came up empty-handed each time.

Eventually, the Coyote noticed me standing up on the hill fully exposed to view. It took him longer than it should have, but that was understandable—he was busy having a good Coyote morning. In some of these pictures he even appears to be smiling. I like these guys.
