Almost every spring Mallards wander our neighborhood. Sometimes they travel in pairs and sometime in groups of three. They waddle up and down the sidewalks and if the neighborhood kids see them they get a free meal of loaf bread. These two articles document a couple of cases:

Now, I think we all know where this behavior is leading, and if we are really lucky, a few weeks later we will be treated to a scene like the one illustrated in today’s post.

Baby ducklings are very cute, but the odds are stacked against them at birth. Mallards lay upwards of 13 eggs per clutch. In this case only two offspring have survived, and they still have a long ways to go before they are grown. Let’s wish them luck!
