This may be the only pair of Tricolored Herons at the University Texas Southwestern Medical Center heron rookery. They are certainly the only two I saw on this Saturday morning. In general, Tricolored herons are rarely seen in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, so this is an exciting find.

These two herons have established a nesting site and nest construction has commenced. A brief mating occurred while we were observing.

  1. These are wonderful birds, it’s so exciting that they are nesting at the UTSWMC rookery. Actually, last year there were at least three pairs nesting, and so far this year I’ve seen two pairs on a nest. I’m almost sure there are more, since I see quite a lot of them come flying in the evening.

      1. As of April 28th there is definitely at least three tricolored nests. They are all in the same tree (or possibly two trees just next to each other), two on the north side, and then the one on the south side that you are writing about in your update. You got some really beautiful shots of the herons in that nest, by the way!!
