We stopped by the southeast Dallas County Bald Eagle nest again this weekend to see how things were coming along. When we arrived on site we found the female eagle sitting on the nest busy incubating her eggs.
Despite a thorough search of the surrounding area, we were unable to turn up the male bird, so we sat down to wait.
Roughly an hour later, and just as the time we had allotted for this observation was about to run out, a large, brown bird was seen approaching from the north.
Binoculars revealed the unmistakable white head feathers and bright yellow beak of a Bald Eagle.
We rushed to our cameras just in time to get a few pictures of the eagle as he zoomed past our position. A close examination of the photographs showed that the male eagle was carrying a large, dark object in his talons as he approached the nest. Prey for the female, no doubt.
The male Bald Eagle continued on at high speed, landing at the nest only a short time later.
There was a brief exchange with the female, lasting less than two minutes, before the male again leapt into the air. Almost instantly he disappeared into the trees directly to the east of the nest tower.
