We discovered thousands of these Whirligig Beetles covering the surface of this small lake in the Trinity River Greenbelt Riverbend Preserve. Most were stationary at the time we arrived, but periodically pockets of the silvery insects would erupt into synchronized movements. All of the insects in one of these groups seemed to radiate outward from the same point on the lake’s surface. In the video below, several of these “eruptions” occur simultaneously, and collisions occur as they rapidly increase in size.
