These pictures were provided to us by Jeannie Smith of Irving, Texas.

Jeannie has a family of Yellow-crowned Night Herons living in an elm tree in her backyard. The birds were first observed in mid-July. Both adult and juvenile herons have been seen. The juvenile birds are just now beginning to fly.

The photographs below provide a good opportunity to compare and contrast the plumage of an adult bird to that of a first year juvenile.

  1. We have a small flock that nest in our area (now suburban previous marsh land) in Tulsa, OK. We love observing our yellow crowned night heron family. They are decreasing in numbers in our small area, as last year we observed nearly a dozen, and only 3 returned this year.
