I had the opportunity to photograph a couple of Roseate Spoonbills over the Fourth of July holiday. This is a first for me. I have never seen one of these birds before.

This Roseate Spoonbill was seen flying over the Joppa Preserve in the Great Trinity Forest.
He landed next to an older companion.

  1. I never knew some of these birds were in Dallas, including the Spoonbills. The Great Trinity Forest seems to be an extraordinary wildlife resource. I hope to walk there before I leave Dallas at the end of the month – but I’m a little intimidated about finding the trails. Is it well marked?

    1. The Great Trinity Forest is a fantastic place. Lemmon Lake in particular is especially unique. Unfortunately, these are not appropriate places for a casual visit. See this message board thread for details: http://audubondallas.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2834

The Trinity River Audubon Center is probably the place to begin. It won’t have the same sampling of wildlife as other places, but it is safe and will allow you a chance to get your bearings.
