This well-worn Gulf Fritillary was photographed at LISDOLA just south of the Lake Lewisville spillway.

That is a MALE. Note the still-vivid orange and very clear black ‘Sharpie’ markings. Females are a little more dusky/tawny-orange and the black markings are softer, as if they were airbrushed. I raise these butterflies with Passionvine from my garden, planted specifically for the Gulf Frits. I raise the BF’s from eggs if I find them, or from caterpillars. These guys are extremely docile and friendly as butterflies go, and they are not shy about laying eggs within inches of my face! They are also good about posing for photos, as you can see from the lovely photos here on this page.
