I observed this Barred Owl as I was exiting the woods along White Rock Creek in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas, Texas.

The owl flew out of the woods and onto the branch of a tree in a more park-like area. There, he immediately attracted the attention of a solitary American Crow.

Owls are the hated enemy of crows, and this crow appeared to be ready to try and drive the owl away. But, the crow’s efforts were halfhearted and he soon flew away.

Crows usually “mob” birds of prey in noisy groups. Perhaps because this crow was alone, he did not feel confident attacking the owl.

The owl, meanwhile, was entirely aware of the crow’s intentions and kept a careful eye on him until he left. This distraction allowed me the opportunity to close the distance between the owl and myself. I started taking pictures at a distance of around 30 yards/meters.

The Barred Owl allowed me a few pictures before he flew to another nearby tree. I repositioned myself slightly for a better view and managed a few minutes of video before the owl flew off again, this time for good.
